Like the perennials that keep popping up in the flower garden outside this
venerable feminist restaurant/bookstore, Bloodroot's loyal fans have been
voting it "Best Vegetarian Restaurant" in our readers' poll for as long as
we've been doing it.

Co-owners/cooks Selma Miriam and Noel Furie keep coming up with creative
ways to turn traditional dishes into vegetarian and vegan delights, and
their success at this is what keeps their customers coming back.

"Primavera means first truth," says Miriam, "so why is pasta primavera
always made with broccoli and carrots, which aren't spring vegetables?" Good
question. Bloodroot's version pairs linguini with artichokes and asparagus
with a white sauce that's made without milk. To add a boost of flavor,
Miriam sprinkles gremolata --finely chopped garlic, parsley and lemon
zest--on top of this pasta dish.

Furie attests that 90 percent of what's eaten at Bloodroot is organically
grown. And, they'd like to extend that percentage by offering tastings of
organic wine and beer.

These two women have fond memories of the late 1970s. After all, their
restaurant/bookstore cooperative run entirely by women got its start in
1977. It was a great time for radical feminists, Miriam recalls. "We were in
the fullness of a movement that did change our country."
